The four hotels on this sheet are built from snow and ice and taken back by the thaw, so each one exists as a season rather than as a permanent building. Layouts change from year to year, and so do carvings, themes and room counts. Hotels with an ice bar attached to a heated building are not entered here.

Alta, Norway

Built again from river ice every winter beside the Alta River, and gone by spring
Carved walls of the season's build, Alta
ON SITE
Every winter the hotel is built again from snow and river ice beside the Alta River, and every spring it melts away. Walls are packed snow, columns and furniture are cut ice, and the plan changes from one season to the next. Carvers work on the surfaces once the shell stands. Because the material returns to the river, nothing of the previous year survives except the drawings.
IN USE
Sleeping rooms hold ice beds laid with hides and insulated sleeping bags, and the air stays near freezing. A bar and a chapel are cut from the same material. Warm buildings alongside hold washing facilities, a restaurant, and lockers for luggage and outer clothing.
AROUND IT
The Alta River runs past the site, frozen through much of the winter, with birch and open fell on both banks. Alta town and its airport are a short drive north. Rock carvings sit near the fjord, and the plateau rises inland towards the Finnmark interior.
SORT OUT FIRST
This is a winter structure only, so check the season; Alta has an airport, and the drive out to the river needs a booked transfer or a car.

A snow castle redrawn each year on the shore of a sea that freezes solid

ON SITE
Kemi raises a snow castle each winter on the shore of the Gulf of Bothnia, and the layout is redrawn every year: walls, towers, a chapel, a restaurant and rooms. Snow is blown onto forms and packed hard, then carved. In recent years a permanent hall has been added to hold parts of the castle for longer. The sea beside it freezes firmly enough to walk on.
IN USE
Snow rooms hold beds on ice blocks with hides and winter sleeping bags, kept a little below freezing. The restaurant seats guests at ice tables. A chapel is used for services. Heated buildings close by hold bathrooms, changing rooms and warm accommodation for guests who prefer it.
AROUND IT
The Bothnian ice begins at the harbour wall, and an icebreaker takes visitors out from the same shore. Kemi town lies behind, small and low. The Kemijoki river reaches the sea close by, and forest runs north towards Rovaniemi and the Arctic Circle.
SORT OUT FIRST
Winter only, so check the season; Kemi is on the rail line north from Helsinki, and the harbour site is a short taxi ride from town.

A snow village in fell country that takes a different carved theme every season

ON SITE
Lainio, in the municipality of Kittilä, holds a village rebuilt from snow and ice every winter around a chosen theme, so the carvings and rooms follow a different subject each season. Snow vaults form the corridors, and ice blocks form the bar, the tables and the sculptures. Scale changes from year to year with the design. Everything melts in spring and the ground returns to open land.
IN USE
Guests sleep in snow rooms on ice bases, on hides and in rated sleeping bags. Carved walls differ from room to room. An ice bar and a restaurant sit under the vaults. Heated cabins and service buildings stand beside the village for washing and for storage.
AROUND IT
Fell country surrounds the site, with the Ylläs and Levi ski areas within driving distance and the Lainio river below. Pine forest and marsh fill the ground between them. Kittilä airport is the nearest, and the roads through the district are long and lightly used.
SORT OUT FIRST
Open in winter only; fly to Kittilä and drive or take a transfer, since buses on these roads are infrequent.

ON SITE
High above the valley, the village is a cluster of snow domes built each winter and left to melt in spring. Domes are packed over inflated forms, then hollowed and carved inside. Passages join them, and a bar is cut from ice. Because the site sits at altitude on open snow, the weather governs the building schedule. The layout repeats a small number of dome types rather than one single plan.
IN USE
Domes serve as sleeping rooms, fitted with insulated mats, hides and expedition sleeping bags. Some are carved inside and others left plain. A shared dome works as bar and dining space. Toilets stand in separate structures, and heated shelter is limited to one small building.
AROUND IT
The Matterhorn stands across the valley in clear weather, with ski runs and lift stations close to the site. Zermatt lies below, reached by train up the valley from Täsch, since the village admits no combustion cars. Glaciers fill the ground away to the south.
SORT OUT FIRST
Cars stop at Täsch and a train continues to Zermatt, and the site is reached by lift and a short walk over snow, in winter only.
