This sheet lists four hotels where the sleeping unit, and not the room, is the basic element: a moulded shell, a timber box, a rigid module, a cabin fitted into a terminal. What they share is that guests sleep in a fitted unit and wash somewhere else. Small hotel rooms with a door and a bathroom belong on other sheets, not on this one.

ON SITE
Osaka saw the first capsule hotel open in 1979, and this is that address. Kisho Kurokawa designed the sleeping units, applying the industrial thinking he had used a few years earlier for stacked residential capsules. The units are moulded shells, set in rows and in two tiers along the corridors. The host building is a plain commercial block in the entertainment district, with the hotel on its upper floors.
IN USE
A capsule holds a mattress, a light and a screen, with a blind at the open end rather than a door. Guests leave belongings in lockers by the entrance. Washing rooms and a bath are shared on the floor, and the corridors between the two tiers are narrow.
AROUND IT
The block stands in Umeda, north of the river, in a dense grid of covered arcades, bars and small restaurants. Osaka and Umeda stations sit within walking distance and feed several rail and subway lines. Department stores and offices rise on every surrounding street.
SORT OUT FIRST
Trains reach Umeda from both airports with one change, and it is worth checking the current name and who the floors admit before travelling.

ON SITE
This hotel occupies a shophouse, the narrow two- or three-storey type built along the older streets with a covered walkway at the front. Behind the plastered facade the plan is long and thin, lit from the two ends. Timber sleeping boxes were fitted inside the existing rooms, stacked in two levels along the depth of the building rather than added to the outside of it.
IN USE
The boxes are wood-lined, each with a bed, a light and a curtain, and steps lead up to the second tier. Bathrooms are shared. A lounge with tables and a kitchen counter takes the ground floor, where the ceiling is high enough to stand under comfortably.
AROUND IT
Shophouse terraces continue along the street, with food shops at ground level and temples close by. The area sits inland from the river, within reach of Chinatown and Little India on foot or one stop on the MRT. Traffic runs steadily on the main road outside.
SORT OUT FIRST
The MRT reaches the street from Changi with one change, and the current address is worth confirming, as the operator has run more than one house.

ON SITE
Set inside a commercial tower, the hotel takes a single floor and fills it with sleeping modules. Each unit is a rigid box with a door, insulated against sound, and the boxes are arranged along short corridors so that the floor plate is used fully. Nothing shows from the street except a lift lobby and a sign. The design answers a city where floor area is scarce and one building holds many uses.
IN USE
A module holds a mattress, controllable light and its own ventilation, with a lockable door in place of a curtain. Shower rooms are shared and cleaned between guests. Corridors are lit low. Storage inside is small, so larger luggage stays at the entrance rather than going in.
AROUND IT
Towers stand shoulder to shoulder in the surrounding blocks, with shops and restaurants on their lower floors. MTR entrances open a short walk away, and trams or buses run along the main road. Steep lanes and stairs climb behind the street towards the slope above.
SORT OUT FIRST
Reach the door by MTR rather than by car, and confirm the current operator and address, which have changed since the first site opened.

ON SITE
Gatwick's South Terminal holds this hotel inside the building itself, on a level above the concourse. There is no separate facade and no forecourt, and the entrance is a door off an airport walkway. Rooms are compact cabins fitted into the terminal structure, so the plan follows the shell they were inserted into. Windows, where they exist, look out at aircraft stands or back into the terminal.
IN USE
Cabins hold a fixed bed, a wet room and little else, with controls placed near the pillow. There is no wardrobe. Some cabins have no window and are lit and ventilated entirely by machine. Check-in is a screen in the lobby, and the corridors are short and carpeted.
AROUND IT
The terminal is the surrounding: check-in halls below, the rail station across a bridge, and shops open along the concourse. Trains run from that station to London and to the south coast. Beyond the airport perimeter the country is fields and small Sussex towns.
SORT OUT FIRST
It sits inside South Terminal, so arriving at North Terminal means a shuttle transfer, and there is little reason to come by car.
