Four hotels and resorts in Canada are entered here on the same pattern as the rest of the site, with the same form and the same four boxes. The first of them occupies pavilions built for a world exhibition. We describe the buildings, the accommodation and the ground around them. The gaming floor is neither described nor judged, here or anywhere else on the site.
Casinos are for adults only. In Canada the minimum age is 19 in most provinces and 18 in Québec; elsewhere it depends on where you are.

Montreal Casino & Hotel
Two pavilions from Expo 67, stacked around open wells on a man-made island
ON SITE
Expo 67 left two pavilions on Île Notre-Dame, and the complex was built into them. The former French pavilion is a ribbed aluminium structure with angled walls, and the Québec pavilion beside it is lower and darker. Floors are stacked around open wells, so the interior reads vertically across several levels. The island itself was made for the exhibition from rock excavated for the metro tunnels.
IN USE
Interior levels are joined by escalators and stairs around the central voids. Restaurants, bars and a hall for live programmes occupy different floors, and hotel accommodation forms part of the complex. Glass walls face the water on several sides. The gaming floor is not described here.
AROUND IT
The island lies in the Saint Lawrence, part of Parc Jean-Drapeau, with lawns, a rowing basin and the Biosphère nearby. A bridge and a metro line connect it to the city. Montréal's towers stand across the water, and a racing circuit runs along the island's edge.
SORT OUT FIRST
The metro reaches Jean-Drapeau on the island, then a short walk or shuttle follows; a bridge carries cars, and the island wind is strong in winter.

Fallsview Casino Resort
A hotel tower set above the gorge, looking across to the falls on the Canadian side
ON SITE
The resort stands on the high bank of the Niagara gorge, a glass and stone tower with a lower podium spreading toward the parkway. The hotel floors rise clear of the podium, so rooms on the river side look straight across to the horseshoe of the falls. The structure is recent, built as one piece rather than converted from an older building, and the cladding reads as a continuous skin of glass.
IN USE
Guest rooms occupy the tower, with the larger suites on the upper floors facing the water. Lifts from the lobby reach both the rooms and the podium levels, where restaurants and halls sit behind the glass. The gaming floor is not described here.
AROUND IT
The Niagara Parkway and the gorge run immediately in front. The falls themselves stand a short walk south, with spray visible from the higher floors on still days. Clifton Hill and the older tourist strip lie inland, and the river marks the border with the United States.
SORT OUT FIRST
Niagara Falls is reached by rail or coach from Toronto, and the walk from the station to the gorge is uphill; a car is useful only if you are continuing along the parkway.

River Rock Casino Resort
A riverside resort on the Fraser's middle arm, with the airport and the mountains in view
ON SITE
The complex sits on the north bank of the Fraser's middle arm, a set of hotel towers and a low podium facing the water. Stone, glass and timber cladding break the mass into stepped blocks rather than one sheer wall. A pedestrian bridge and a riverside walk run along the front, and the plan is open to the river on the south side. The ground here is flat reclaimed land, so the buildings read against the water and the sky.
IN USE
Hotel rooms occupy the towers, many of them with river or mountain views. Corridors and lifts connect the rooms to restaurants and halls in the podium. An outdoor terrace sits above the walk. The gaming floor is not described here.
AROUND IT
The Fraser spreads wide at this point, with Richmond's low suburbs behind and Vancouver's towers in the distance. Vancouver International Airport lies across the water to the west, and aircraft pass low on the approach. The Canada Line metro reaches Bridgeport a short walk inland, and the mountains stand north of the city on a clear day.
SORT OUT FIRST
The Canada Line from the airport or downtown stops at Bridgeport; the walk from there is short, and there is little reason to arrive by car unless you are already on the highway.

Casino Rama Resort
A resort hotel on First Nation land beside the lakes north of Toronto, inland from the city
ON SITE
The resort occupies a large low site on the Chippewas of Rama First Nation, a hotel block and a wider podium set among parking and lawns rather than against a street. The hotel is a mid-rise slab with a long facade, clad in pale panels and glass, and the plan spreads horizontally because the land is open. Nothing of an older settlement remains on the plot. The surrounding ground is lake country, not a city block.
IN USE
Rooms run along the slab, reached by a central lobby and lifts. Restaurants and a hall for live programmes sit in the podium, connected to the hotel by indoor corridors so that guests need not go outside between them. The gaming floor is not described here.
AROUND IT
Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe lie close by, with woodland and cottage roads between them. Orillia is the nearest town, a short drive west. Highway 11 runs north from Toronto through this district, and the land around the resort is low, wet and lightly built.
SORT OUT FIRST
There is no useful rail station at the door; the practical route is the highway north from Toronto, or a booked shuttle, and the site is not a walk from town.
